Manually Install a Mod Loader to a Server

📘

There is an easier way

The following guide is recommended for advanced users only.

If you are looking to add a Mod Loader to a server, there are other options available to create a server with a Mod Loader installed. The following options are available for quick installation:

In order to load mods on a server, a Mod Loader is required. Without a Mod Loader, a server will not be able to load any mods as Minecraft does not have a built-in feature for mod loading.

These instructions will guide you through how to download the server files for a Mod Loader, then upload them into a server.

Use the Akliz Server Installer

Before following these instructions, make sure that there are no other options available. There are already options available for installing a Mod Loader to a server, such as Minecraft Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge. Creating one of these three servers will automatically install a Mod Loader to a server. If you have created a server with one of these options, you can skip the rest of the instructions as you are ready to install mods!

If there is a version not available through the installer, contact support and leave a request for a specific version. Our friendly support team will work to get any version available right away.

For more custom installations such as mod-plugin hybrid servers or alternative mod loaders not available through the installer, continue following the instructions below.

Download Server Files

First, to get started with installing a Mod Loader to a server manually, the server files for the Mod Loader will need to be downloaded. The steps required will vary depending on the Mod Loader's instructions.

  1. Go to the download page for the desired Mod Loader.
  2. Select the version of the Mod Loader and download the installer. This will either be a specific installer for servers, or a universal installer with a server option.
  3. Run the installer, following the instructions for creating server files. Create a new folder where the server files will be installed to and select this for the installation location.

Create a Server

A server will need to be created so that the files for the mod loader can be installed. This is done with a fully custom server installation containing only a Java version.

  1. Login to Command Center.
  2. Go to the Servers page, then click on New Server
  3. Click on Minecraft, then click the option for Custom Minecraft.
  4. Select a Java version for the server:
    1. For versions 1.11.2 and below, select Java 7.
    2. For versions 1.12.2 to 1.16.5, select Java 8.
    3. For versions 1.17 to 1.17.1, select Java 16.
    4. For versions 1.18 to 1.20.4, select Java 17.
    5. For versions 1.20.5 to 1.21.11, select Java 21.
    6. For versions 26.1 and above, select Java 25.
  5. Fill in the server details, then click Create Server.

Upload Server Files to your Server

After creating a server, there will be no files on the server. This will be where you will now want to upload the server files.

  1. Login to SFTP.
  2. Open the custom-minecraft/ folder on the server side.
  3. On your device side, open the folder where the server files were installed.
  4. Copy the server files from your device to the server. Make sure that the server JAR is copied over.

Select the Server JAR

Once the files are uploaded to the server, the JAR file for running the server will need to be selected. This is done through the server's settings page.

  1. Go to the Servers page, then click on the Manage button for the server you are installing a Mod Loader to.
  2. Click Game Settings from the Gear Icon menu.
  3. In the Custom JAR section, select the server JAR file that was uploaded to the server and click Install.
  4. Start your server.
